Early Orthodontics

When Should a Child First Visit the Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists advises that children have their first orthodontic screening by age 7. This allows Dr. Rodney Torres at Torres Orthodontics to assess the need for future orthodontic treatment and determine its optimal timing. Many local dentists are trained to spot early orthodontic issues and may refer children to our office even before age 7 if concerns arise.

Why Evaluate Children at an Early Age?

Early diagnosis and treatment can:

  • Guide erupting teeth into better positions
  • Preserve space for incoming permanent teeth
  • Reduce the risk of fracturing protruded front teeth

If early treatment is necessary, Dr. Torres can guide jaw growth and incoming permanent teeth. Early intervention can also:

  • Regulate the width of the dental arches
  • Create space for permanent teeth
  • Avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions
  • Reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth
  • Correct habits like thumb sucking
  • Eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems

Early treatment can simplify future treatment after all permanent teeth have erupted, promoting better dental health and growth.

Does Early Treatment Benefit All Children?

Not all children benefit from early treatment. Some orthodontic issues are more efficiently corrected during the teen years when all permanent teeth have erupted. Certain skeletal problems should be addressed when growth is more advanced.

Join Our 7&UP Club!

Dr. Torres will create a personalized treatment plan based on each child’s needs. If early treatment isn’t necessary, your child can join our free 7&UP Club, which doesn’t require a referral. This membership ensures your child receives free follow-up observation appointments until they’re ready for treatment. Plus, they can have some fun participating in special prizes and contests along the way. However, it’s crucial to have an evaluation by age 7.

Additional Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Beyond a beautiful smile, orthodontic treatment can:

  • Improve bite function
  • Enhance the ability to clean teeth
  • Prevent wear on teeth
  • Increase the longevity of natural teeth

Will Early Treatment Prevent the Need for Braces Later?

Early treatment can address significant issues, prevent more severe problems, and simplify future treatment. However, because not all permanent teeth have erupted during early treatment, final alignment may not be complete.

Typically, a shortened comprehensive phase (Phase II) with full braces during the teen years completes the correction. In some cases, no further treatment is needed.

Should We Still See Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?

Yes, regular dental check-ups and cleanings every 6 months are crucial during orthodontic treatment. Patients with braces need to put extra effort into maintaining their dental hygiene to ensure the highest level of dental health.
